Bridgeport Dominates Stat Sheet But Falls In Women's Soccer Season Opener To Southern Connecticut, 1-0
Purple Knights Back In Action On Sunday At 5:00 PM Against Southern New Hamphire
Manchester, N.H.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team opened its 2019 season on Friday afternoon at the Penmen Classic hosted by Southern New Hampshire University, and the defending NCAA Division II National Champions dominated the offensive statistics on the day but could not find the back of the net, as the Southern Connecticut State Owls (1-0) defeated the Purple Knights, 1-0.
UB outshot SCSU, 22-5, in the match, and the Purple Knights took five corner kicks to the Owls one; however, the only goal of the contest came on an unassisted marker off the foot of Southern Connecticut's Rossella Graniero 18:20 into the first half.
Bridgeport junior Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) led her team in shots on Friday with six, and she was followed by senior Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England) with four.
Allie Smith picked up the clean sheet in net for SCSU making seven saves, and the Owls were also credited with two team saves clearing UB shots away just before they crossed the goal line.
Bridgeport goalkeeper Claudia Torres (Fr., Santo Domingo, D.R.) made three stops in her Purple Knights' debut.
Up next, the UB women's soccer team will close out its visit to the Granite State on Sunday afternoon, when UB will take on host Southern New Hampshire University in the final match of the Penmen Classic. Action is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
