Maegen Doyle And Jennifer Wendelius Selected To 2018 National Google Cloud Women's Soccer Academic All-America Teams
Duo Are Champions Both On The Pitch And In The Classroom
Bridgeport, Conn.- Along with bringing home an NCAA National Championship this season, two members of University of Bridgeport women's soccer team have been selected to the 2018 National NCAA Division II Google Cloud Women's Soccer Academic All-America Team selected by CoSIDA (The College Sports Information Directors Association of America).
Junior forward Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England), a Marketing major with a 3.77 GPA, earned a spot on the First Team National Academic All-America team, and senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden), a Marketing major with a 3.98 grade point average, was named to the First Team National Academic All-America team.
Doyle, a consensus All-America for her play on the pitch, finished the 2018 season with a school record 28 goals, which placed her number two in the country in that category. She also netted 13 game-winning goals this year which tied her for number one in that nation in that statistical category. Maegen's 59 points in 2018 are also a single-season University of Bridgeport record. Doyle was also named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player at this past weekend's NCAA Division II National Semifinals and Finals held in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Wendelius, who received the Elite 90 award for the 2018 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship recognizing the student-athlete with the highest grade point average amongst the team's playing in the national semifinals and was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player at this past weekend's NCAA Division II National Semifinals and Finals held in Pittsburgh, Pa. where she recorded two shutouts, closed out her outstanding UB career with a total of 33 clean sheets and 29 victories in net.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.
The Division II Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division II Academic All-America® teams.
Doyle and Wendelius' selections mark the 13th all-time national Academic All-America team members from the University of Bridgeport joining softball's Cathleen Meade (Second Team in 1993), women's soccer's Julia Hansson (Second Team in 2012 and First Team in 2013), women's soccer's Tabea Rauschenberg (Second Team in 2014), men's swimming Ruben Jimenez (First Team and National Division II Men's At-Large Academic All-America of the Year in 2014 and 2015), men's swimming Oscar Pereira (Second Team in 2014), women's volleyball Ying Shen (Third Team in 2014), women's soccer Nicola Worthington (Second Team in 2016). women's gymnastics Christine Liautaud (Third Team in 2016) and women's swimming Annagrazia Bonsanti (Second Team Women's At-Large in 2018).
