Women's Soccer Claims 2018 ECC Regular Season Title After 5-0 Win At Roberts Wesleyan
Top-Seeded Purple Knights Will Now Host Daemen At 3 PM On Tuesday In One ECC Championship Tournament Semifinal
Rochester, N.Y.-For the sixth time in the last nine seasons and the eighth time in program history, the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team has won the East Coast Conference regular season title, as the visiting Purple Knights dominated the host Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks, 5-0, on a rainy and cold Saturday afternoon in Western New York to claim the 2018 crown. With the win, UB finishes the regular season with an 8-1-0 ECC record and a 12-4-1 overall mark. RWC wraps up its 2018 campaign at 5-9-2 overall and 3-6-0 in conference play.
With Saturday's win, the Purple Knights, as the top seed, will now host the number-four seed, Daemen College Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon, October 30 at 3:00 p.m. in one 2018 East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Semifinal. The other semifinal will featured the number-two seed Mercy College Mavericks hosting the number-three seed LIU Post Pioneers that same afternoon. Tuesday's two winners will meet on Friday, November 2 for the 2018 ECC Women's Soccer Title and an automatic berth in the following week's NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. If Bridgeport wins, the 2018 ECC Championship Match will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Knights Field.
UB simply dominated play on Saturday outshooting the host Redhawks by a 23-3 margin.
Junior Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England) opened the scoring for Bridgeport at the 26:47 mark in the first half with her team-leading nineteenth goal of the season.
Just 2:01 later, sophomore Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.) scored her first of two goals on the day.
A tally by sophomore Sara Berglund (Borlange, Sweden) off an assist from classmate Rebekka Skaasheim (Balestrand, Norway) in the 35th would give UB a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second 45 minutes of action, the visitors got goals from Marieke Kramer (Sr., Megchelen, Netherlands), her first of the year, and Basilicato would find the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon and for the fifth time in 2018.
Bridgeport senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made three saves to record her seventh clean sheet of the season and solo shutout number 28 of her career.
