Bridgeport Women's Lacrosse Opens 2020 ECC Slate With 22-8 Win Over UDC
22 Goals Set A New Single-Single Game Program Record
Washington, D.C.-The University of Bridgeport women's lacrosse team led the host Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia 8-5 with 6:49 to play in the first before scoring the next 14 goals in a row on its way to a 22-8 win on Monday afternoon in the 2020 East Coast Conference opener for both squads. UB is now 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the ECC. UDC remains winless at 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The 22 goals scored are a single game record for the Purple Knights surpassing the old mark of 21 set on four different occasions.
Nine different players scored goals for UB led by junior Julia Ruscio (St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada) and Shyla Murray (Brentwood, N.Y.), who each found the back of the net four times on Monday. Ruscio finished with a seven-point day, as she also dished off three assists.
UB sophomore Hannah McDermott (Guilford, Conn.) had a six-point day against the Firebirds with three goals and three helpers.
Five Purple Knights, Jessica Kinser (So., Voorhees, N.J.), Barbara Orsini (Sr., N. Babylon, N.Y.), Courtney Hylock (Sr., Muskegon, Mich.), Tereza Kreuzova (Fr., Prague, Czech Republic) and Addison Plume (So., Glen Arm, Md.), each had two goals, plus freshman Jessie Bennett (Monroe, Conn.) added one goal for the winners.
In goal, senior Cheyanne Gangel (Oakridge, N.J.) had three saves in the first half, and sophomore Abbie Jones (Rising Sun, Md.) had four second half stops.
Up next, the UB women's lacrosse team will face Jefferson University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in a neutral site game to be played in Sparks, Maryland.
