Purple Knights Fall Just Short In ECC Women's Hoops Tussle At Daemen
UB Downed By A Score of 61-59
Amherst, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team wrapped up its weekend trip to Western New York on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought, two-point loss to the host Daemen College Wildcats, one of the hottest teams in the East Coast Conference, 61-59. UB is now 4-12 overall and an even 2-2 in conference play. Daemen ups its overall record to 12-3, and the Wildcats move to 4-1 in the ECC.
The Purple Knights held a 47-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter and were up by the same margin, 57-55, with 4:10 to play in the game, but Bridgeport was limited to only two points during the remainder of the contest, as Daemen eked out the win. Saturday's tilt featured nine ties and 12 lead changes.
Junior Alyzae Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) led UB in scoring with 14 points, and she was joined in double figures by classmates Janiece Loney (Herndon, Va.) with 12 points and Samirah Henderson (Rahway, N.J.) with 11 points.
Henderson and freshman Stephanie McBride (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for the team lead in rebounding, as they each pulled down six boards.
Rebounding was a big factor in the win for Daemen, as the Wildcats finished the game with a 45-30 advantage on the glass.
Daemen's Tiara Filbert led all scorers in the game with 28 points, and teammate Katie Titus finished with a double-double of 10 points and a game-leading 15 rebounds.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday evening when the Purple Knights open a two-game homestand against Molloy College. Tip-time is set for 5:00 p.m.
