Old Westbury, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's basketball team got off to a quick start in Wednesday night's 2019 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament Quarterfinal at NYIT, as the sixth-seeded Purple Knights led the third-seeded Bears, 18-11, after the first quarter, but the host team outscored UB, 22-6, in the second stanza to take a 33-24 halftime which they never relinquished on their way to a 70-57 win. Bridgeport ends its season at 12-17, and NYIT moves onto the ECC Semifinals where they will face number two seed, Daemen College at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Bridgeport's Hubbell Gym which will be the host site for this weekend's ECC Women's and Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Semifinals and Finals.
The Purple Knights managed to pull within four points, 58-54, with 2:42 to play, but NYIT closed the game out on a 12-3 to advance.
Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Bridgeport on Wednesday night with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, and senior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) closed out her UB career with 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Graduate student Nkechi "NK" Ilang (Ebonyi State, Nigeria) also reached double figures for UB with 10 points.
Meg Knollmeyer led three NYIT players in double-digit scoring with a game-high 22 points.
