Bridgeport, Conn.-It was a happy Senior Day for the softball team on Saturday, as the Purple Knights blanked the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights, 10-0 and 8-0, to raise the team's record to 16-6 both overall and in the East Coast Conference. Both of Saturday's contests were called after five innings due to the run rule. Queens in now 2-18 both overall and in the ECC. The two victories by the Purple Knights on Saturday also give head coach Dawn Stearns a total of 200 for her career at UB.
In game one, sophomore Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) powered a 14-hit Bridgeport offensive attack by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and five runs batted in. Yates now has a team-high four homers so far in 2021.
Sophomore Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) had two hits and two RBI in the opener, and seniors Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) and Hope Lincoln (N. Providence, R.I.) plus freshman Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.) also added two base knocks.
Senior Sarah Silver (Vernon, Conn.) also drove in a pair of runs in game one.
Senior Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) even her season record in the pitching circle at 4-4 by firing a three-hit shutout in the opener, as she fanned four and issued three bases on balls.
In game two, the Bridgeport offense again banged out 14 hits led by Kaira Ramon, who went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Sophomore Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) and freshman Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.), each had two hits and a run batted in for the winners in the nightcap.
Freshman Grace Derita (Middletown, Conn.) crushed her third home run of the season in game two, a two-run blast. All three of Grace's hits so far this season have been home runs.
In the pitching circle, sophomore Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) rolled right along raising her season record to 9-2 and lower her earned run average to 0.85, as she pitched her fourth shutout of the season limited the visiting Knights to only one hit over five innings. Kaite struck out and walked only one on the afternoon.
Up next, the Purple Knights will close out their 2021 regular season on Monday afternoon at the College of Staten Island with a doubleheader slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
