Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team battled back to earn a hard-fought split with the visiting Molloy College Lions in Seaside Park on Saturday afternoon, as UB took the nightcap, 6-5, after falling in the opener, 6-2, in nine innings. Bridgeport is now both 9-1 overall and the East Coast Conference. Molloy moves to 14-10 overall and 4-6 in the ECC.
In game one, the Purple Knights got off to fast start scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by senior Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) and a solo home run by sophomore Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.), her second four-bagger of 2021.
Unfortunately those two runs in the bottom of the first was all the offense UB could muster in the opener, as the visiting Lions tied the game with two runs in the third inning, and then scored four unearned runs on a grand slam by Amanda King in the top of the ninth.
Sophomore Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) took her first loss of the season coming in in relief in game one, as she worked two innings, allowing two hits, four unearned runs with five strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, senior Samantha Ferreri (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drove in what proved to the winning run in the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to make a winner of Kaite Burawski, who is now 5-1 on the year. In the nightcap, she pitched her fourth complete game of the season, allowing seven hits, five runs (all earned) with eight strikeouts and five walks over her seven innings in the circle.
The Purple Knights got off to another quick start in game two, as sophomore Samantha Schiebe (Monroe, Conn.) drove in three runs in the bottom of the first with a bases-clearing double.
Senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) also had a run batted in for the winners in the second game.
Up next, the University of Bridgeport softball team heads to New York City to take on Queens (N.Y.) College in Flushing for a 12 noon East Coast Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
