Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team continued its red-hot start to the 2021 season on Tuesday afternoon in Seaside Park, as the Purple Knights moved to 8-0, both overall and in the East Coast Conference, with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting College of Staten Island Dolphins. The Purple Knights took game one, 6-0, and completed the sweep with a 10-1 victory in five innings in the nightcap. CSI is now 3-7 overall and in conference action.
In opener, senior Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calif.) fired a six-hit complete game shutout to raise her season mark to 2-0, as she fanned eight batters and issued only two walks.
On offense in game one, sophomore Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.), who finished the day going 5-for-8 in the two games, and freshman Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.), each had two hits to lead an eight-hit Bridgeport attack. Senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) drove in two runs, and freshman Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.) hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the pitching circle in the nightcap, sophomore Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) continued to shine, as she raised her season record to 4-0. Burawski allowed two hits and a run to the first three batters of the game, but dominated after that allowing only one base runner on a hit by pitch. Katie struck out nine without issuing a walk in her five innings of work in game two.
Sophomore Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calf.) went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in for the victorious Purple Knights in game two. Meg McFarland wrapped up her impressive afternoon with three more hits and two runs batted in, and the game ended in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Grace Derita (Middletown, Conn.), making her first at bat of the season, made her first collegiate hit a memorable one, as she blasted a two-run, game-ending home run over the left-centerfield wall.
Up next, the Bridgeport softball team is scheduled to continue a busy week of action on Thursday afternoon at St. Thomas Aquinas with a 2:30 p.m. UB's next home games are slated for the Saturday at 12 noon when Molloy College comes to Seaside Park for an ECC doubleheader.
