Buffalo, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport softball team took the long trip to Buffalo, New York for an East Coast Conference matchup with the host D'Youville College Saints on Friday afternoon, and the Purple Knights came away with two wins, both going eight innings, 2-1 in game one, and 5-4, in game two. With the two victories, Bridgeport remains undefeated at 6-0 both overall and in conference play so far this season. D'Youville is now an even 7-7 overall and 2-6 in the ECC. UB is also now a perfect 3-0 in extra-inning games so far in 2021.
In the opener, the Purple Knights trailed the hosts 1-0 entering the top of the seventh inning, but UB scored an unearned run to tie the game, and then took a 2-1 lead which proved to be the final score on an RBI base hit from senior Kaira Ramon (Stamford, Conn.) in the top of the eighth inning.
Sophomore Meg McFarland (Monroe, Conn.) and freshman Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.), each had two hits in game one to lead a six-hit Bridgeport offensive attack.
In the pitching circle, senior Miranda Hillman (Placentia, Calf.) was outstanding earning her first win of 2021 in the opener; working an eight-inning complete game, in which she allowed the Saints only five hits, one run (earned) and struck out seven and issued only one base on balls.
In game two, Meg McFarland's RBI base hit, her second base knock of the game, drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning.
Bridgeport trailed 4-4 heading into the top of the sixth inning, but the Purple Knights knotted the contest at 4-4 on clutch runs batted in from Kiana Robinson, who had two hits and two runs batted in game two, and classmate Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.).
Senior Elyssa Marmolejo (Rialto, Calif.) also had two hits and an RBI in the nightcap.
McFarland's game-winning hit in the top of the eighth, made a winner of her high school teammate, Samantha Schiebe (So., Monroe, Conn.), who is now 2-0 on the season. Schiebe worked all eight innings in game two, allowing seven hits, four runs (only one earned) with five strike outs and one walk.
Up next, the UB softball team is slated to host Mercy College in an ECC doubleheader on Sunday in Seaside Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
