Purple Knights Wrap Up A Busy Weekend Of Swim Action With Strong Showing At Connecticut College
Teams Return to The Poll Next Saturday At UConn Husky Invitational
New London, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming team wrapped up a busy weekend of action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights traveled down I-95 to New London, Connecticut for a meet hosted by Connecticut College. The UB men wrapped up their 2018-19 dual meet slate with an unblemished record, as they defeated the hosted Camels. 137.00-123.00. On the women's side, the Purple Knights swam a double dual meet, as they also faced off against Assumption College, as Bridgeport fell to Conn. College, 172.50-84.50, and they also were topped by Assumption, 151.00-106.00.
For the Purple Knights' men's team, four swimmer won a pair of individual events, as senior Brian Kelly (Mahwah, N.J.) won both distance races taking the 1000 Free (9:39.40) and the 500 Free (4:39.10), junior Erik Hren (Maribor, Slovenia) grabbed first place in the 200 Free (1:43.53) and the 100 Free (47.72), senior Wilmar Du Plessis (Bloemfontein, South Africa) topped the podium in the 100 Back (59.31) and the 200 Back (1:54.28) plus sophomore Kosta Mitrovic (Belgrade, Serbia) won the 100 Breaststroke (59.17) and 200 Breaststroke (2:08.06).
Junior Juan Patino (Cali, Columbia) captured the 50 Free (21.61), and graduate student Nick Semenov (Kiev, Ukraine) took first place in the 200 IM (1:57.78).
The UB men also took first place in the 200 Free Relay on Saturday.
On the women's side, senior women's team captain Nina Stegu (Ljublijana, Slovenia) had two first place efforts in the 200 Free (1:54.23) and the 50 Free (24.69) and Mariia Rezhylo (Kiev, Ukraine) also won a pair of races taking the 100 Breaststroke (1:03.49) and 200 Breaststroke (2:23.49).
Up next for the UB swim teams will a trip to next Saturday's UConn Husky Invitational before the begin final preparations for the 2019 Metropolitan Conference Championship later in February.
