Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team picked up a key East Coast Conference win over the visiting number 17-ranked Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon at home, as an early goal from graduate student Goncalo Mendes (Vila do Conde, Portugal) held up, as the Purple Knights blanked Mercy, 1-0. With the win, UB is now 9-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the ECC. Bridgeport is now unbeaten in its last seven matches with six victories and a tie. Mercy is now 11-3-2 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play.
Mendes headed home his fifth goal of the season off a nice cross from senior Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway) on a play started by classmate Erlend Skagestad (Mjoendalen, Norway) just 16:17 into the match.
That goal would be all the Purple Knights needed, as sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) was outstanding in net making five saves to pick up his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Mercy outshot Bridgeport 13-8 on the afternoon.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will travel to Molloy College next Saturday for another big East Coast Conference contest. UB's final road match of the 2019 regular season is set to begin on Long Island at 12 noon.
