Bridgeport, Conn.-A late goal off a corner kick scramble with just under seven minutes to play in the second half lifted the visiting Southern New Hampshire University Penmen to a hard-fought 2-1 non-conference men's soccer win over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Saturday evening. UB is now 1-3-0 on the season, and SNHU remains unbeaten at 2-0-1.
The Penmen opened the scoring in the game at the 11:38 mark of action when Alex Satrustegui netted his second goal of 2019 off a nice through ball from Michael Goncalves.
Saturday's contest was defensive struggle as a total of only 16 shots were taking between the two teams with UB holding a 9-7 edge in that department.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of Southern New Hampshire until the 73:33 mark when Bridgeport senior Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway) found the back of the net for the first time this season to tie the match at 1-1, when his shot deflected of a Penmen defender and past keeper Patrick Quinn. Quinn finished with two outstanding saves on the night, and Bridgeport goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Soph., Hamburg, Germany) made two fine stops of his own.
Unfortunately for UB fans, the game remained level for just under 10 minutes before the Penmen scored the winning tally.
Up next, the Bridgeport men's soccer team will close out a three-match homestand on Wednesday afternoon against Goldey-Beacom. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
