Bridgeport, Conn.-Graduate student Goncalo Mendes (Vila do Conde, Portugal) scored two goals in the first 5:53 of the match to lead the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the visiting American International College Yellow Jackets in UB's 2019 home opener at Knights Field on Wednesday evening. With the win, Bridgeport is now 1-2-0 on the young season, and with the loss, AIC is now 2-1-0.
Mendes opened the scoring just 3:31 into to action when he floated a beautiful long shot from the right flank over the head of AIC goalkeeper Ben Taylor and into the back of the net.
Just over two minutes later. Goncalo completed his brace when senior Leandro Avila (Panama City, Panama) played a nifty through ball to him in the center of box that he neatly placed into the goal to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 advantage.
Bridgeport sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) made three saves to earn his first clean sheet of the season.
UB and AIC finished tied in shots on the night at 14-14.
Up next, the Bridgeport men's soccer team will continue its three-match homestand with a Saturday night tilt against Southern New Hampshire University. Action is schedule to begin at 6:00 p.m.
