Old Westbury, N.Y.-Freshman Tom Godden (Leeds, England) scored the match-winning goal in the 63rd minute and classmate Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany) saved the day by clearing a potential game-tying goal off the line with just under nine minutes to play, as the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team posted a big 2-1 East Coast Conference road win over the host New York Institute of Technology Bears on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 7-4-0 overall and 4-3-0 in the ECC. NYIT is now 7-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference action.
UB opened the scoring on the day when junior Leandro Avila (Panama City, Panama) netted his sixth goal of the season just 8:40 in play off an assist from freshman Kamrock Tovar (Stratford, Conn.). Tovar assisted on both Bridgeport goals on the day.
The match would head halftime with the Purple Knights leading 1-0 and would stay that way until the Bears tied things up at 1-1 in the 58th minute setting up Godden's game-winner at the 62:07 mark.
UB freshman goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, German) made three saves for the winners, as NTIT outshot UB, 14-10, on the afternoon.
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will step out of conference play and travel to Delaware on Wednesday afternoon to face Goldey-Beacom College. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
