Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-Junior Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway) scored two second half goals, and freshman goalkeeper Carlos Tofern (Hamburg, Germany) was outstanding in net making nine saves to earn his first career shutout, as the University of Bridgeport men's soccer team earned a big 3-0 road East Coast Conference victory over the host Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Purple Knights move to 4-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the ECC. Mercy suffers its first loss of 2018, as the Mavericks are now 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Vadseth put home his first goal of the day when he put home a rebound off a shot from classmate Yoel Salvador (Bridgeport, Conn.) in the 69th minute.
The Purple Knights upped their lead to 2-0 at the 73:04 mark when graduate student Marlon Montanella (Cannes, France) converted a penalty kick.
Vadseth then put the game away in the 88th minute when he notched a brace on the afternoon finishing a cross from freshman Tom Godden (Leeds, England).
Up next, the UB men's soccer team will host a non-conference match against Dominican (N.Y.) College on Tuesday night. Kickoff at Knights Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
