Bridgeport, Conn.-A bunt single by sophomore Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) followed by a throwing error scored classmate Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), who led off the bottom of the 15th inning with double, and gave the University of Bridgeport a marathon, 8-7 East Coast Conference win over the visiting Mercy College Mavericks on Tuesday afternoon in a game that was suspended by darkness after 12 innings tied at 7-7 on Monday. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 9-15 overall and 6-2 in the ECC. Mercy is now 11-16 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
UB had a total of 17 hits over the two days led by Roberts and sophomore Patrick Palmer (Ansonia, Conn.), who each had three hits. Palmer blasted his first home run of the season in the game.
Freshman Quinton Carpenter (Magnolia, Texas) worked three scoreless innings of relief on Tuesday allowing only one hit with four strikeouts to pick up his second win of 2019.
Up next, the Bridgeport baseball team will host the University of New Haven in Seaside Park on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
