Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split is second consecutive doubleheader with the Molloy College Lions on Sunday afternoon in Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights took a see-saw affair in game one, 9-8, in 11 innings on a walk-off wild pitch, and Molloy came back to win the nightcap, 6-3. With the split, UB is now 15-10-1 overall and 8-4 in the East Coast Conference. Molloy is now 20-9 overall and 5-3 in the ECC.
In the opener, the teams were tied 5-5 heading into extra innings before Molloy scored three unearned runs in the top of the tenth before the Purple Knights came back with three runs of their own on an RBI-single by junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) and a booming two-run double by senior Alec Jannotta (Branford, Conn.). Both McCone and Jannotta, each had two hits for winners in game one, as did sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.), who also knocked in two runs.
In the bottom of the eleventh, junior Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) walked to open the frame, and he was advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.). After a Grabowski ground out moved Carey to third base, sophomore Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.), who had two runs batted in the opener was hit by pitch. Torres took second base, and on the next pitch, Molloy's Sean Gordon uncorked a wild pitch to score Carey and give UB the 9-8 victory.
On the mound, junior Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif.) picked up the win for the Purple Knights to make his season record 4-2, as he worked four innings in which he allowed six hits, three runs, all of which were unearned, with four strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, Molloy scored all six of its runs in the first two innings and held on for the win despite being out hit, 12-5. All twelve of the Purple Knights hits in the nightcap were singles.
Casey McCone went 3-for-3 for UB in game two, and Ben Torres, Jose Negron (Soph., New Haven, Conn.) and Bobby Schryver (Soph., Ansonia, Conn.) each had two hits.
Up next, the UB baseball is schedule to travel to Dominican (N.Y.) College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest on Tuesday night at Provident Bank Ballpark.
