Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the Mercy College Mavericks on a damp Saturday afternoon, as Bridgeport won the opener, 7-3, and completed the sweep in game two with an extra inning, 4-3, win in nine innings. With the sweep, the Purples Knights, who took three of the four games in the series versus Mercy, are now 12-8-1 overall and 6-2 in the ECC. The Mavericks are now 9-15 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
In game one, the Purple Knights scored two runs each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to grab the win, as the UB offense produced seven runs on 11 hits.
Sophomore Jose Negron (New Haven. Conn.) collected three hits and drove in a run to help lead the Purple Knights' offense in the opener. Junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) had two hits including a two-run inside-the-park home run in game one. Classmates Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) and Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) also had two hits, and Carey added an RBI.
Sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) had two runs batted in for the winners in game one, and Ben Torres (So., Hollywood, Fla.) had drove in Bridgeport's run in the opener.
On the mound, starter Rob Anderson (Sr., Stratford, Conn.) was outstanding to up his season record to 2-1, as he worked eight innings allowing only four hits with three runs, and Anderson struck out 12 and walked only one batter. Junior Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.) worked a scoreless ninth inning to finish up for UB.
In game two, the Purple Knights, playing as the home team, took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI-single by Ben Torres and a Mercy error. The Mavericks came back to plate three runs in the top of the fifth before UB's Alnaydo Rodriguez (Sr., Bronx, N.Y.) sent the game into extra innings by drawing a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rodriguez would then drive in the winning run with a bases loaded single up the middle no outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior Adam Thayer (Ansonia, Conn.) picked up his first win of 2016 in the nightcap, as he worked 2.2 innings of hitless and scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
Sophomore Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) was also stellar out of the UB bullpen working two innings of scoreless relief before handing the ball to Thayer.
Up next, the UB baseball team is scheduled to travel to Wilmington (Del.) University on Tuesday afternoon.
