Purple Knights Score Three, Two-Out Runs In Top Of The Ninth To Rally For ECC Baseball Win Over Mercy
UB Takes Advantage Of Three Mercy Errors To Pick Up The Victory
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team took advantage of three Mercy College errors to score four unearned runs on the day included three with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to pick a 5-4 East Coast Conference road win over the host Mavericks on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 10-8-1 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Mercy is now 9-13 overall and 2-4 in the ECC.
Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth inning, UB loaded the bases with no out, but the Purple Knights were down to their last out when a ball by Casey Ouellette (Jr., New Canaan, Conn.) was mishandled by the Mercy second baseman allowing two runs to score giving the visitors a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) would then single to give UB an important insurance run, as Mercy would not go away quietly scoring one run in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score, 5-4.
On the mound for Bridgeport, junior Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif.) raised his season record to 3-1 by gutting out a complete game in which he allowed 13 hits, but kept the damaged to a minimum by not allowing any walks and striking out nine.
On the day, the Purple Knights had a total eight hits, as senior Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Isaiah Rivera (Newington, Conn.) each had a pair of hits.
The same two teams will complete their four-game East Coast Conference tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
