Baseball Takes Three Of Four From Queens (N.Y.) College With 6-5, 10-Inning Win On Wednesday
Senior Alec Jannotta Drives In Game-Winner With Two-Out RBI Infield Single
Flushing, N.Y.-A two-out, RBI infield single by senior Alec Jannotta (Branford, Conn.), one of his three hits and three runs batted in on the day, lifted the University of Bridgeport baseball team to a 6-5, 10-inning East Coast Conference road victory over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Wednesday afternoon in New York City. UB is now 9-7-1 overall, and the Purple Knights are 3-1 in conference play. QC slips to 8-11 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.
UB trailed 5-2 after four innings, as the Purple Knights allowed four earned runs to score in that inning, as the Purple Knights committed four errors on the afternoon.
Along with Jannotta's strong day at the plate, Bridgeport sophomore Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and a pair of runs scored.
Pitching ruled the day for Bridgeport, as the UB pitchers allowed only five hits in the contest and only one of the five Queens' runs scored was an earned run. Purple Knights' hurlers fanned eight on the day and allowed four bases on balls.
Junior Matt Van Riper (Elmwood Park, N.J.) started on Wednesday for Bridgeport and worked the first four innings allowing three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. All five Queens' runs were charged to van Riper, but only one was an earned run.
Classmate Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif.) blanked the host Knights over the next three inning allowing no hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Sophomore Andrew Oswald (St. James, N.Y.) worked the final three innings of the game to earn his second win in the four-game series with Queens, as he allowed just two hits during his time on the mound.
The Bridgeport baseball team is right back in action on Thursday afternoon when they open another four-game East Coast Conference weekend series with a single, nine-inning home game versus the Mercy College Mavericks. First pitch at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
