Two-Out Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Baseball To 4-3 ECC Win At Queens
Teams Will Close Out Four-Game ECC Series On Monday In NYC
Flushing, N.Y.-Trailing 3-2, the University of Bridgeport baseball team scored two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, as the Purple Knights picked up a 4-3 East Coast Conference road win over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Saturday afternoon in New York City. With the win, the Purple Knights are now 8-7-1 overall and 2-1 in the ECC. Queens slips to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
After scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, the Purple Knights were held scoreless until the top of ninth when junior Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.), who had two hits on the day, tied the game at 3-3 with a two-out, RBI single, and sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) plated what proved to be the winning run with a bases loaded walk.
Junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) also had two hits and an RBI for the winners on the afternoon.
On the mound, senior Rob Anderson (Stratford, Conn.) picked up his first win of 2016 working the final three innings of the game, allowing three hits and one run with four strikeouts and no walks.
After taking Easter Sunday off, the same two teams will close out their four-game ECC series at Queens with a single, nine-inning game on Monday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
