Myrtle Beach, S.C.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split two games on its season-opening road trip to South Carolina on Saturday, as the Purple Knights dropped an 8-1 decision to Franklin Pierce University of open the day, but the team quickly rebounded to defeated Concordia (N.Y.) College Clippers, 10-1. The Purple Knights are now 2-1 on the young 2016 season.
In Saturday's opener against powerful Franklin Pierce, junior Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) gave UB a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI double, but it was all Ravens from that point on, as they scored the next eight runs to take the win to raise their season record to 4-0.
Against Concordia, the Purple Knights banged out 10 hits, and Overbaugh again had a strong game at the plate going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Junior Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) drove in two runs in the win, and sophomore Bobby Schryver (Ansonia, Conn.) had two hits for the winners.
Bridgeport junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) slammed his second home run in as many days in the victory over Concordia, and teammates Bryan Kondor (Sr., Shelton, Conn.), Justin Carey (Jr., Amherst, Mass.) and Casey Ouellette (Jr., New Canaan, Conn.), each knocked in one run for the winners.
On the mound versus the Clippers, who are now 1-1 on the year, junior Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif.) picked up the win working five innings, in which he allowed three hits and one run with five strikeouts and one walk.
The UB baseball team will close out its 2016 season-opening trip to Myrtle Beach on Sunday with a single game at 12 noon versus Nyack College.
