Defense Betrays Purple Knights As UB Baseball Drops 4-1 ECC Decision To LIU Post
Teams Will Continue Four-Game Weekend Series With Doubleheader At LIU Post On Saturday
West Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights dropped a 4-1 decision to the visiting LIU Post Pioneers in the opener of a four-game weekend East Coast Conference series. Friday's game was played at West Haven High School. UB is now 15-19 overall and 10-7 in the ECC. LIUP ups its overall mark to 14-10, and the Pioneers are 11-6 in conference play.
The visitors scored an unearned run in the third inning, a single run in the seventh and two more unearned markers in the eighth to take a 4-0 lead. Bridgeport scored its only run of the afternoon on s sacrifice fly by sophomore Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Freshman PJ Martino (Medford, N.Y.) started and pitched well for UB but took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the year. Martino worked seven innings in which he allowed on four hits, two runs (only one earned) while striking out five and walking two.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader on Long Island on Saturday. Game one is slated to begin at 12 noon on the campus of LIU Post.
