Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with Queens (N.Y.) College on Sunday afternoon taking game one, 8-3 and falling in the game two, 4-1. With the split, the Purple Knights are now 6-15 overall and 3-3 in the ECC. Queens is now 4-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
In the opener, UB jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed keyed by a two-run home run by junior Dave Egeland (Tome River, N.J.). Sophomore Tyler Gambardella West Haven, Conn.) and freshmen Kevin Fich (Bronx, N.Y.) and Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.) each had two hits to help power the Purple Knights 12-hit attack in game one.
Sophomore Anthony Alicki (Milford, Conn.) started and picked up the win in game one to even his season record at 2-2 working five inning in which he allowed four hits, three runs (all earned), plus he struck out five while walking four batters.
Freshman PJ Martino (Medford, N.Y.) earned his second save of the season closing the opener out with four innings of scoreless relief in which he allowed no hits while walking three and striking out four.
The highlight of game two for Bridgeport came in the sixth inning when senior Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) lined a double to left field to move into first place on UB's career doubles list with 36 surpassing Peter Barrows who had 35 two-baggers during his four years in the Park City.
The same two teams will close out their four-game series at Queens with a single, nine-inning contest slated for a 3:00 p.m. start.
