Junior Brian O'Keefe Limits LIU Post To Five Singles As UB Notches Big 5-0 ECC Baseball Victory
UB Now 9-12 In Conference Action
April 26, 2014
Bridgeport, Conn. – The University of Bridgeport baseball team defeated the visiting LIU Post Pioneers, 5-0, in an important East Coast Conference matchup under the lights of the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday night. With the victory the Purple Knights improve their record to 15-22-1 overall and 9-12 in the ECC as they push for a playoff spot. The loss drops LIU Post to 15-14 overall and 8-9 in the ECC.
The game cruised along as both teams traded zeroes for the first four and a half innings. Bridgeport did not pick up their first hit until the bottom of the fifth when Tim Bickford (Jr., Wallingford, Conn.) singled a ball through the hole between short and third. Following a double from freshman Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.), Alec Jannotta (So., Branford, Conn.) came up with a big two RBI single to give Bridgeport a 2-0 lead. Those runs would be all that junior left-hander Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) would need as he dominated on the hill.
O'Keefe scattered five singles as he went the distance for a complete game shutout to even his overall record at 5-5. The complete game was his fourth of the season and second shutout of the year. Brian struck out 10 batters along the way while walking none. McCone finished the game with three hits in four at-bats including a double, triple, a run scored and two RBI.
The Purple Knights and Pioneers will continue their four-game set on Saturday April 26, as they are slated for a double header starting at 12:00 pm, on the campus of LIU Post.
