Purple Knights Split A Home ECC Baseball Doubleheader With Queens
UB Takes Game One, 7-1 And Falls In Game Two, 1-0
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team split an East Coast Conference doubleheader with the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on a wind-swept Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport's Seaside Park. UB won game one, 7-1, and QC avoided the sweep with a tight, 1-0 victory in game two. Bridgeport is now 8-17 overall and 2-9 in conference play. Queens is now 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the ECC.
In game one, four Purple Knights, Jesse Solar (Sr., Marlton, N.J.), Mike Perry (Jr. East Haven, Conn.), Paul Menendez (Fr. Miami, Fla.) and Matt Costleigh (Fr., West Islip, N.Y.), each had two hits to lead the team's 12-hit offensive attack. Solar also drove in two runs.
Freshman Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif.) worked six shutout innings as the starter to even his season mark at 2-2. Edwards allowed four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, Queens' Jonathan Russell struck out 17 UB batters to notch the 1-0 shutout victory.
Bridgeport freshman Adam Thayer (Ansonia, Conn.) took the loss in the nightcap working four innings in which he allowed four hits, one earned run while fanning six and walking one.
UB senior Mike Nowak (Latham, N.Y.) was outstanding in three innings of relief in which he allowed no hits while striking out seven and allowing only on base on balls.
Queens and Bridgeport will close out the four-game ECC series between the two teams with a single, nine-inning affair in Flushing, N.Y. on Sunday.
