Pitching Rules The Day As UB Splits A Non-Conference Baseball Doubleheader With LeMoyne
Purple Knights Take Game One, 3-2, And Fall In Game Two, 2-1
Brookhaven, N.Y.-Pitching was the name of the game on a chilly Tuesday afternoon on Long Island, as the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and the LeMoyne College Dolphins split a non-conference baseball doubleheader played at Dowling College's Golden Lions Field. UB won the opener, 3-2, and LeMoyne took game two, 2-1. With the split, Bridgeport is now 6-8 on the year. Lemoyne now sits at 6-13 overall.
In game one, the Purple Knights gave up two runs in the top of the first inning and that was as all the team rallied to post the 3-2 victory.
Senior Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.) and freshman Casey Oullette (New Canaan, Conn.) each had two hits and drove in a run for the winners. UB freshman Tyler Gambardella (West Haven, Conn.) drove in the Purple Knights other run in the opener.
On the mound in game one, freshman Sal Lovaglio (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was outstanding in relief of starter Mike Nowak (Sr., Latham, N.Y.), as he pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless ball allowing only three hits with three walks while striking out six to notch his first collegiate victory.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to grab the win. Junior Mike Perry (East Haven, Conn.) had two hits in three trips to the plate.
Freshman left-hander Adam Thayer (Ansonia, Conn.) worked six scoreless innings as the starter limiting LeMoyne to only five hits while striking out three and walking only two. Freshman Ray Kreiger (Derby, Conn.) took the loss in relief for the Purple Knights in game two allowing both runs in the seventh inning, only one of which was earned.
Up next for the UB Baseball team will be a weekend East Coast Conference opening series with St. Thomas Aquinas College. Location of games and dates will be finalized in the next few days.
