Freshman Casey McCone's Walk-Off Single In Bottom Of The Ninth Lifts UB Baseball To 3-2 Win Over Bentley
Victory Snaps A Three-Game Losing Skid For The Purple Knights
Winter Park, Florida-Freshman Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) singled home senior Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.) from third base with one out in the bottom of ninth inning to give the University of Bridgeport baseball team a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Bentley University Falcons in a non-conference baseball game played in Winter Park, Florida on the campus of Rollins College. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Bridgeport, as the Purple Knights are now 4-6 on the season. Bentley is now 1-6 in the early going of 2014.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Solar struck out but reached first base on a passed ball. He would then move to second when the next UB hitter Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.) reached on an error. Jesse would then move get to third on a wild pitch and then come home on McCone's game-winning single.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Purple Knights tied things up on an RBI-single by freshman Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y.). The Falcons would then grab a 2-1 lead in the eight, and UB would tie things up again on a base loaded walk to senior Brock Roggie (Lowville, N.Y.) in the bottom of the inning.
McCone and junior Mike Perry (East Haven, Conn.) led the UB offense on Thursday, as they each notched two hits.
Freshman Ray Kreiger (Derby, Conn.) picked up the win in relief to even his season record at 1-1, as he worked a scoreless ninth inning.
The same two teams will meet again at Rollins tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m.
