STAC Wins Twice To Capture ECC Crown Taking Saturday's Game One, 6-2, And Winning Conference Title With 9-1 Victory
Brookhaven, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team's quest for the 2013 East Coast Conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II National Championship came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the number-four seeded Purple Knights, who entered Saturday undefeated in the ECC Championship Tournament, lost twice to top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in action that took place at Dowling College. STAC won Saturday's first game, 6-2, and took the 2013 ECC crown with a 9-1 victory in the winner take-all final game of the weekend. Bridgeport was limited to only nine total hits by Spartans pitching in both of Saturday's games. Bridgeport wraps up its 2013 season at 22-26 overall, and St. Thomas Aquinas heads to the NCAAs with an impressive 39-12 record. STAC also won the 2013 East Coast Conference regular season title.
In game one, junior John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) had two hits, and senior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.) drove in both UB runs.
In Saturday's second game, freshman Bryan Kondor (Shelton, Conn.) knocked in the Purple Knights' lone run.
