Baseball Bests LIU Post, 6-1
Purple Knights Clinch Spot In 2013 ECC Championship Tournament
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team opened its final series of the regular season with a 6-1 win over the visiting LIU Post Pioneers on Friday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 19-22 overall and 12-9 in conference play.LIU Post slips to 14-28 overall and 6-15 in the ECC. Friday's win also clinched a spot in the 2013 ECC Championship Tournament for UB, as they hold the tiebreaker over Queens (N.Y.) College.
Junior Brock Roggie (Lowville, N.Y.) helped led the Bridgeport offense on Friday with two hits and two runs batted. Senior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.) and freshman Nick Zieniuk (Margate, N.J.) also added two hits and one RBI to the Purple Knights' offensive attack in the win.
Sophomore Brian O'Keefe (Milford, Conn.) was the starter and winner on the mound for Bridgeport on Friday, as he went six shutout innings in which he allowed six hits. O'Keefe fanned six batters and walked zero in those six frames.
The same two teams continue their four-game weekend series at LIU Post on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 12 noon.
