Purple Knights Bang Out 14 Hits On Their Way To An 8-1 ECC Baseball Win At Queens
Two Teams Close Out Their Four-Game Series In Flushing On Tuesday Afternoon
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team snapped a three-game winning streak with an 8-1 East Coast Conference win over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights in New York City on Monday afternoon. With the victory, the Purple Knights are now 11-15 overall and 5-6 in conference play. QC is now 11-16 overall and 7-4 in the ECC. Queens scored the game's first run in the second inning, but Bridgeport responded to grab a 2-1 lead after four innings on the way to the win.
As a team, UB had 14 hits on the day led by three hits apiece from senior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.), sophomore Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshman Matt Gagne (West Haven, Conn.). Bickford knocked in three runs, and Olszyk had two RBI, as did freshman Bryan Kondor (Shelton, Conn.).
On the mound, senior starter Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.) was outstanding going eight innings in which he allowed only one run on nine hits while striking out three and walking only one batter. Freshman Ryan Manning (Milford, Conn.) worked a scoreless ninth to wrap things up for the Purple Knights.
Monday's victory was also the number 200 in the career of head coach Joe Tonelli, who notch 189 wins at Albertus Magnus College and now has 11 at the University of Bridgeport.
UB and Queens will close out their four-game ECC series in Flushing with a single game on Tuesday that begins at 3:00 p.m.
