Purple Knights Now Set To Open 2013 Conference Schedule On Thursday At St. Thomas Aquinas
Bridgeport, Conn.-Four University of Bridgeport pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Purple Knights blanked the visiting Post University Eagles, 4-0, in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. With the win, UB is now 5-8 on the season. Post is an even 8-8 in 2013.
Bridgeport starter Matt Wing (Sr., Brockville, Ontario, Canada) was outstanding on Tuesday as he picked up his first win of the 2013 season (1-2), as he went seven innings in which he allowed only five hits while striking out eight and walking only one. Senior Alex Riley (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded the final out of the game with the bases loaded to notch his second consecutive save for UB.
Junior Justin Weakley (Cold Brook, N.Y.) led a nine-hit offensive attack for Bridgeport, as he went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Justin also drove in a run and stole a base, plus he was hit by a pitch to reach base in all four of his plate appearances on Tuesday. Bridgeport freshmen Matt Gagne (West Haven, Conn.) and Nick Zieniuk (Margate, N.J.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI for the winners.
Next up for the UB nine is the team's 2013 East Coast Conference opener at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday afternoon.
