Baseball Drops Two At STAC By Identical 3-2 Scores
Purple Knights Back In Action On Tuesday At Dowling
Pomona, N.Y.-It was close but no cigar for the University of Bridgeport baseball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights were swept in an East Coast Conference road doubleheader by the host St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans by identical 3-2 scores. UB is now 9-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play. STAC raise its season record to 27-13, and the Spartans are now 12-4 in the ECC.
In game one, the Spartans scored single runs in each of the first three innings and held on for the victory. STAC could muster only three total hits in the opener, but junior Matt Wing (Brookville, Ontario, Canada) was the hard-luck loser hurling a complete game in which he allowed on two earned runs. Wing is now 2-3 on the season.
The UB offense had 10 hits in game one led by juniors Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.), Berny Polanco (Dominican Republic) and Mike Doran (Milford, Conn.), who each had two hits, Doran drove in both runs for the Purple Knights.
In the nightcap, junior Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.) took the loss, as he too pitched a complete game. Maull is now 1-5 on the year.
Senior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) had two hits, and classmate Matt Nassi (N. Providence, R.I.) had the team's only RBI in game two.
The UB baseball team is scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday afternoon at Dowling College. Game time on Long Island is slated for 3:00 p.m.
