Big Second Inning Helps Baseball To A 10-2 ECC Road Win Over Queens
Mike Olszyk Goes 5-For-5 With Two Home Runs On The Day
Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team used a big, six-run second inning, keyed by a two-out, bases-clearing triple by senior Ryan Barba (Stratford, Conn.), to cruise to a 10-2 road East Coast Conference victory over the host Queens (N.Y.) College Knights on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, Bridgeport is now 5-10 overall and 2-4 in ECC play. Queens falls to 6-13 overall and 1-4 in league action.
The 10 runs scored by the Purple Knights at Queens is a 2012 single-game season high. The UB offense, which banged out a total of 14 hits on Wednesday, was led by junior Mike Olszyk (Hamden, Conn.), who went 5-for-5 with two home runs, as he blasted a two-run shot and a solo homer.
Junior catcher T.J. Mangan (Bronx, N.Y.) had a fine day at the plate versus QC, as he went 3-for-6 with three runs batted in. Sophomore John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) chipped in a 2-for-5 day at the plate for the winners.
On the mound, junior Anthony Tortolano (Exeter, R.I.) picked up his first win in a UB uniform, as he threw five innings in which he allowed five hits and two runs. Senior Kyle Trudeau (Branford, Conn.) worked four scoreless innings of relief in which he allowed only three hits to notch his first save.
The Bridgeport baseball team will look to continue its winning streak on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Mercy College of an East Coast Conference doubleheader. Action gets underway in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. at 12 noon.
