Baseball Stays Alive In ECC Tournament With 1-0 Win Over Molloy
Purple Knights Will Be Back In Action At 3:00 p.m. On Friday
Brookhaven, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team stayed alive in the 2011 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament with a heart-stopping 1-0 win over the top-seeded Molloy College Lions on Friday morning. With the win, UB moves on in the double-elimination tournament to play another must-win contest at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. Molloy is eliminated after falling to St. Thomas Aquinas yesterday. Molloy is now 31-20 on the year.
Bridgeport (29-12) was limited to only one hit in the game and scored its only run on a third inning sacrifice fly by senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.) that scored classmate Gaetano Guinta (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
Barrows also threw out the tying run at the plate from right field in the top ninth inning to end the game.
Senior Anthony Plomitallo (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) worked the first 8.1 innings of the game to pick up the win. Anthony is now 5-0 on the year. Junior Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) record the last two out on Friday morning to notch his second save.
