Baseball Tops Dowling, 4-2
Barrows' Bat And Glove Help Lift Purple Knights To 24th Win Of The Season
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team won its third game in a row and its tenth in its last twelve outings with a 4-2 home East Coast Conference victory over the Dowling College Golden Lions on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Purple Knights are now 24-10 overall and 17-7 in conference play. Dowling drops to 17-23 overall and 12-13 in the ECC. UB is also now an impressive 13-2 at home so far in 2011.
Bridgeport scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead on a balk and a double by junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) that plated two runs.
After Dowling scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-1, UB would score its fourth and final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Barrows led a 10-hit Bridgeport attack on Tuesday by going 3-for-4.
Junior Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) picked up his seventh save of the season working out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the top of the seventh inning on a pop-up to the mound and a fantastic diving catch in right by Peter Barrows that preserved the Purple Knights' lead. Bartolomei worked 2.2 innings to notch the save in which he allowed three hits and one run, while fanning two and walking no one.
Starter Chris Maull (Soph., Winslow, N.J.) worked six innings in which he allowed only one run to even his season record at 2-2. Maull struck out five and walked one during his time on the mound.
UB is scheduled to be right back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they open a five-game East Coast Conference series against the Mercy College Mavericks. The game is scheduled to be played at West Haven High School with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
