Peter Barrows And Tom Wiacek Earn Weekly East Coast Conference Baseball Honors
Duo Helped Purple Knights Set A School Record For Single-Season Wins Last Week
Central Islip, N.Y.-University of Bridgeport senior outfielder Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.) has been named Co-East Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, and teammate Tom Wiacek (Jr., Bolton Landing, N.Y.) has been selected as the ECC Pitcher of the Week for their outstanding play during games from April 25-May 1, 2011. Barrows shares his award with Anthony Mazzella of Queens (N.Y.) College.
Barrows had two hits in each of the Purple Knights' six games last week to post a .500 batting average (12-for-24) with one home run, nine runs batted in and a slugging percentage of .917 as he had also had three doubles and two triples on the week. Peter also scored seven runs and had a .571 on-base percentage last week. He also was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts to raise his team-leading total to 14 on the season
Wiacek was simply dominant out of the UB bullpen as he recorded three of his team's four wins last week. In 10.1 innings pitched, Tom went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA (allowed one unearned run) with 16 strike outs and two walks. Wiacek limited he opposition to a .139 batting average against. His best performance came in a 5-4 Bridgeport win in 11 innings on Sunday over Queens. In that game, he worked five innings retiring the first 13 batters he faced in order. In those five innings, Tom struck out seven without allowing a walk. On the season, he is 3-2 with a 0.57 ERA and one save.
Barrow and Wiacek plus their teammates are next scheduled to be in action on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they host Dowling College at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Purple Knights will enter that contest with a 23-10 overall record which is a school record for single-season victories.
