Barba's Walk-off Single Leads Purple Knights To Comeback Win Over Queens
UB Tops QC, 5-4, In 11 Innings; Tom Wiacek Dominates In Relief
West Haven, Conn.-Junior Ryan Barba (Stratford, Conn.) blasted a bases-loaded, one-out, walk-off single to deep left in the bottom of the eleventh inning to left the University of Bridgeport baseball team to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the visiting Queens (N.Y.) College Knights. The Purple Knights trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of eighth inning, but battled back to score a run in the bottom of eighth on an RBI double by junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.), who had two hits on the day, and then tie the game at four in the bottom of the ninth on a double by junior Matt Ranaudo (Milford, Conn.) that scored senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who had two hits on the day.
With the win, UB is now 23-10 overall and 16-7 in East Coast Conference play. Queens falls to 10-29 overall and 8-17 in the ECC.
Barba's hit made a winner of relief pitcher Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) who is now 3-2 on the season. Wiacek was simply outstanding on Sunday retiring the first 13 batters in a row he faced. Tom pitched five innings in which he allowed only one hit while striking out seven and not walking a batter.
Senior Tyler Moffatt (Colonie, N.Y.) got the Purple Knights off to a good start on Sunday with a two-RBI double in the first inning.
UB is next scheduled to face Dowling College at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
