Purple Knights Walk-Off With Sweep Of Dowling
UB Takes Both Games By A 2-1 Score; Eric Schlitter's Double With One Out In The Tenth Lifts Team To Win In Game Two
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball ran its winning streak to five games with a home East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep of the Dowling College Golden Lions on Friday afternoon, as the Purple Knights won both games by identical 2-1 scores. The victory in game two came in walk-off fashion in 10 innings when junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) doubled home Matt Nassi (Jr., N. Providence, R.I.) from second base with one out in the frame. The pair of wins lifts Bridgeport's overall record 19-8, and the Purple Knights are now 12-5 in conference play. Dowling is now 15-20 overall and 11-11 in the ECC.
Schlitter's game-winning hit in game two gave the victory to junior Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) who pitched four innings of scoreless relief to raise his season record to 4-1. Bartolomei worked a scoreless final inning to wrap up game one and earn his fifth save of 2011.
In the opener, UB scored two unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk to freshman John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) and line drive single by senior captain Gaetano Giunta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) that knocked in what proved to the winning run.
Senior Anthony Plomitallo (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), who worked six innings as the game two starter for the Purple Knights, won game one with perfect inning of relief of starter Chris Maull (Winslow, N.J.), who allowed just one run in five innings of work. Plomitallo' season record is now 3-0.
UB and Dowling are scheduled to continue their five-game ECC series on Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
