Baseball Grabs Big ECC Win At St. Thomas Aquinas
Purple Knights Defeat Spartans, 7-3, To Take Rubber Match Of Five-Game ECC Series
Orangeburg, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team picked up a big East Coast Conference road win on Monday afternoon, as the Purple Knights defeated the host St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 7-3. The win lifts UB's overall record to 16-8 and ups the team's conference record to 9-5. More importantly, the victory gives Bridgeport a 3-2 edge in the five-game conference series. STAC is now 17-15-1 overall and 8-7 in the ECC.
Senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led the Bridgeport offensive attack on Monday going 2-for-5 with three runs batted in. Junior Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) chipped in two doubles, as he went 2-for-4 at the plate. Fellow junior Matt Nassi (N. Providence, R.I.) also had two hits on the day for UB.
On the mound, starter Nick Vautrin (Jr., S. Hadley, Mass.) pitched five solid innings in which he allowed only one earned run to earn the win. Vautrin is now 3-1 on the season.
Junior relievers Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) and Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) wrapped up the win of the Purple Knights pitching 2.2 innings in which they did not allow a run.
UB return to action at Dowling on Wednesday afternoon. Game time on Long Island is set for 3:30 p.m.
