Strong Pitching Leads Baseball To A 2-1 Win Over C.W. Post
Plomitallo, Wiacek and Bartolomei Combine To Six-Hit Pioneers
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team used strong pitching and timely hitting to post a 2-1 home East Coast Conference win over the C.W. Post Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon. UB has now won back-to-back games, and the Purple Knights are 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the ECC. C.W. Post falls to 3-19 overall and 2-5 in conference play
Senior starter Anthony Plomitallo (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) earned his first victory of 2011 (1-0) for Bridgeport on Tuesday, as he scattered four singles over 6.2 innings pitched. Junior Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.) continued his strong start to the season working 1.1 innings of hitless relief in which he struck out two batters. Wiacek, who has not allowed an earned run in 10.1 innings pitched in 2011, got his team out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Matt Bartolomei (Stratford, Conn.) worked the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Senior captain Gaetano Giunta (Brooklyn, NY) got the Purple Knights on the board first against C.W. Post with a second inning RBI single. Classmate Stefan Wagner (Freemont, N.H.), who went 2-for-3 on the day, drove in UB's other run with a sixth inning single that plated Mike DeLellis (Sr., Marlton, N.J.). DeLellis scored both of Bridgeport's runs on Tuesday.
The Purple Knights are off on Wednesday before returning to action at Molloy on Thursday afternoon to complete a five-game series with the Lions.
