UB And Molloy Treat Fans To Five-Set ECC Women's Volleyball Thriller
Bridgeport Now 20-6 Overall And 6-2 In Conference Play After Friday's Action
Bridgeport, Conn.-The host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and the visiting Molloy College Lions, the top two teams in the East Coast Conference women's volleyball standings, played a back-and-forth match in Hubbell Gym on Friday evening with ECC-leading Lions winning in five sets, 26-24, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9. The victory keeps Molloy unbeaten in conference play at 8-0 (20-4 overall). UB is now 6-2 in the ECC (both of their losses have come against the Lions) and 20-6 overall.
In the deciding fifth set, Bridgeport jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but the visitors came back to take an 8-7 advantage at the court switch which they never relinquished; winning five straight points to close out the contest.
Senior Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) led a balance offensive attack for the Purple Knights with 16 kills, and she added 11 digs.
Classmate Emily Burford (Albuquerque, N.M.) added 14 kills, and sophomore Amanda Keller (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) chipped in 11 kills and hit .333 on the night.
Junior Klein Johnson (San Antonio, Texas) led Bridgeport with 32 assists and contributed 16 digs, and sophomore Carly Killorin (Centennial, Colo.) also finished with a double-double of 15 assists and 11 digs.
Sophomore Breanna Jones (Littleton, Colo.) led the UB defense with 21 digs in the five sets.
Molloy's Kacey Affrunti finished with a match-high 21 kills to help her team to the victory.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will take the weekend off and return to the court on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. when the team plays its 2019 regular season home finale against American International College.
