New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team opened its 2017 schedule on Sunday afternoon with a tri-match hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. UB opened play with a three-set loss to the host Owls (2-0), 18-25, 23-25, 19-25, and came back to top the Lions of Georgian Court University (0-2) in four sets to wrap up the day, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-18.
Against SCSU, senior Bruna Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) notched a double-double with a team-high 16 kills and 11 digs. Junior setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch. Colo.) also had a double-double versus the host school on Sunday with 24 assists and a team-leading 18 digs.
Two other Purple Knights reached double-digits in digs in Sunday's first match, as sophomore Amanda Hennemann (Nova Petropolis, Brazil) had 16, and freshman Olivia Storaci (Longmont, Colo.) finished with 15.
In the victory over GCU, Amanda Hennemann was on fire on both offense and defense posting a double-double of 19 kills and 16 digs. Bruna Santos posted back-to-back double-doubles on the day with 12 kills and 14 digs in the win.
Senior Sheri Middleton (Humboldt, Kansas) also reached double figures in kills in Sunday's second match with 13.
Ellie Rich directed the Bridgeport offense with 37 assists against the Lions, and Olivia Stoarci helped anchor the Purple Knights' defense with 16 digs.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will be in action in Florida playing two matches at Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday and two contest at Barry University on Saturday.
