Purple Knights Take Tough Four-Set Home Win Over New Haven In Non-Conference Volleyball Action
Team Back In Action At Home On Saturday Versus Roberts Wesleyan In ECC Action
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team upped its 2016 overall season record to 6-7 with a hoard-fought, four-set, non-conference home win over the visiting University of New Haven Chargers on Thursday night in Hubbell Gym. UB won the match, 25-22, 31-29, 29-25, 26-24. UNH is now 6-5 overall. The Purple Knights have won six of their last eight matches.
Senior Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and junior Bruna Santos (Curitiba, Brazil) lead a balanced Bridgeport offensive attack that featured four players in double-digit kills, as they each registered a match-high 13 winners. Cruz notched a double-double with 21 digs to tie with classmate Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France) for the match lead in that defensive category. Santos chipped in five digs and three service aces plus three block assists for the winners.
UB junior Sheri Middleton (Humboldt, Kansas) was outstanding at the net all night long for the Purple Knights finishing the contest with 12 kills and a match-high eight total blacks (three solos).
Senior Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden) had a fine night helping her team to the win with 10 kills on a .667 hitting percentage, plus Frida added four digs, three total blocks, two service aces and one assist.
Sophomore setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had 48 assists and played a solid all-round match adding four kills, eight digs, four blocks and one service ace.
Kristine Rios had a triple-double for UNH with 11 kills, 20 assists and 17 digs.
The UB women's volleyball team returns to East Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon at home when the Purple Knights host Roberts Wesleyan College. First serve is set for 12 noon on October 8th.
