Bridgeport Sweeps Weekly ECC Women's Volleyball Awards
Sara Cruz, Ellie Rich and Morgan Knight Recognized For Their Outstanding Play
Central Islip, N.Y.-Three members of the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team have earned recognition from the East Coast Conference for their outstanding play in matches that took place from September 19 through September 25, 2016.
Senior Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) has been named the ECC's Player of the Week. Sophomore Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned conference Setter of the Week accolades, and freshman Morgan Knight (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) has been selected as the East Coast Conference's Rookie of the Week.
Cruz had an outstanding week to help her team go 3-0. In those three matches last week, Sara hit .347 and averaged 3.91 kills per set. She also averaged 2.45 digs per set in 11 sets played over the week. In all three matches, Cruz had double digit kill totals and in wins over LIU Post and Franklin Pierce, she had double-doubles with 15 kills and 10 digs. She also chipped in four service aces, three blocks and two assists on the week.
Rich directed the UB offense to an unblemished 3-0 record on the week averaging 11.1 assists per set, as she had a season-high 50 helpers versus LIU Post, 30 in a sweep of Mercy and 42 in a four-set victory over Franklin Pierce. In the win over LIU Post, Rich notched a double-double with those 50 assists and 13 digs. On the week, she average 2.1 digs per set and added 11 total kills and five block assists plus one service ace.
Knight was a key cog in helping the Purple Knights last week, as she averaged 2.64 kills and 2.55 digs per set in 11 total sets played in those three wins, Knight notched a pair of double-doubles with 10 kills and 11 digs in a sweep at Mercy and 12 kills and 14 digs in a four-set win over Franklin Pierce. Morgan also chipped in five service aces, two assists and a block assist on the week.
This week, the UB women's volleyball team will be busy playing three matches, as they travel to Adelphi University on Tuesday and the College of St. Rose on Friday and host Queens (N.Y.) College on Thursday night in Hubbell Gym.
