Volleyball Opens 2016 Home And ECC Schedules With Four-Set Win Over LIU Post
Claire Anderson, Sara Cruz And Ellie Rich All Finish With Double-Doubles In The Victory
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team opened its 2016 home and East Coast Conference schedules in fine style on Tuesday evening in Hubbell Gym, as the Purple Knights posted a four-set, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, win over the visiting LIU Post Pioneers. Tuesday's victory is UB's first of the season, as the Purple Knights are now 1-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play. LIUP is now 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the ECC.
Freshman Claire Anderson (Oak Harbor, Washington) and senior Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) played big parts in the Bridgeport win, as they each posted a double-double. Both Anderson and Cruz finished with match-highs in kills with 15. Anderson led all players on the night with 18 digs, and Cruz added 10 for the winners.
UB junior Sheri Middleton (Humboldt, Kansas) also reached double-digit kills with 13 and hit an impressive .500 in the match.
Sophomore setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished with her own double-double, dishing out a match-leading 50 assists and 13 digs.
Senior libero Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France) had her normal solid match on defense recording 16 digs, and she also contributed five assists.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball continues East Coast Conference action at Mercy College on Thursday night. First serve in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Purple Knights' next home match is scheduled for the following day, Friday, September 23rd when the Franklin Pierce University Ravens come calling to the Park City. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
