UB Volleyball Clinches At Least A Share Of The 2015 ECC Regular Season Title And Top-Seed in ECC Championship Tournament With Five-Set Win At Dowling
UB Now 13-1 In Conference Play And 21-8 Overall
Oakdale, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team clinched at least a share of the 2015 East Coast Conference regular season title and the hosting duties for this season's ECC Championship Tournament that will begin on Friday, November 20 with a hard-fought, five-set road win over the host Dowling College Golden Lions on Tuesday night. UB won the match, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11. The victory raises the Purple Knights overall record to 21-8, and UB is now 13-1 in the ECC. Dowling is now 23-6 overall and 11-3 in conference action.
After splitting the first two sets, Dowling raced out to 20-14 lead in set number three before Bridgeport went on an eight-point run to grab a 22-20 lead on its way to a 25-22 win in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The host Golden Lions would tie the match up at two sets apiece with a 25-20 triumph in the fourth set to force the contest to a deciding fifth set.
In that fifth set, the Purple Knights trailed 10-9 before closing the frame out on a 6-1 run to win the match with a 15-11 victory in set number five.
UB junior Katarina Krstonosic (Kikinda, Serbia) led her team with an impressive double-double on Tuesday slamming a match-high 19 kills with 28 digs.
Classmate Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was next on the kills list for the Purple Knights with 17, and senior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) recorded her own double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs.
Junior Frida Randen (Sodertalje, Sweden) continued her consistent play at the net for the winners with eight kills and eight block assists.
Freshman setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) directed the UB offense with 46 assists, and she fell just shy of her own double-double with nine digs, plus Rich also added four kills.
Junior libero Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France)had a fine evening on defense with 23 digs in the five sets for the Purple Knights.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will open a two-match homestand to close out the regular season on Thursday night, as Bridgeport hosts Daemen College. First serve in Hubbell Gym is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
