New Haven, Conn.-A short trip up I-95 to New Haven and the campus of Southern Connecticut State University proved to be an excellent journey on a chilly Saturday for the University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team, as the Purple Knights swept a tri-match hosted by SCSU to run the team's winning streak to eight matches. In the squad's first match of the day, UB swept Merrimack, 25-6, 25-23, 25-17, and the team closed the day with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-16 victory over the host Owls. Bridgeport is now 11-6 overall on the 2015 season.
In the win over Merrimack, junior Katarina Krstonosic (Kikinda, Serbia) led the Purple Knights with 15 kills. Classmate Sara Cruz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) added eight kills for the winners, and both Cruz and Krstonosic added four block on against the Warriors. As a team, UB amassed a single match high 12 blocks versus the Warriors.
Freshman setter Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had 33 assists, five kills and three digs in Saturday's opener.
Junior libero Amelie Guinci (Cannes, France) led Bridgeport with eight digs against Merrimack.
In the win over SCSU, Sara Cruz led the Purple Knights with 17 kills, and senior Jade Zhao (Huhhot, China) slammed 11 kills with a ,667 attack percentage for Bridgeport.
UB senior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) fell just shy of a double-double in the victory over Southern Connecticut with 10 digs and eight kills.
On defense versus SCSU, Amelie Guinci had a match-high 19 digs, and Katarina Krstonosic reached double figures with 12 digs.
Up next, the UB women's volleyball team will return to conference play at Queens (N.Y.) College on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
