Volleyball Survives Roberts Wesleyan To Post Five-Set Home Win
UB Remains Perfect In Conference Play At 11-0
Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport volleyball team played its first five-set of the 2014 season on Saturday afternoon, and the Purple Knights survived a strong comeback attempt by the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks, to post a 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 20-25, 15-9 East Coast Conference home win on Saturday afternoon in Hubbell Gym. With the victory, UB remains perfect in conference action at 11-0. Bridgeport has now won four matches in a row and 13 out of their last 14 outings to raise the tam's overall record to 16-2. RWC is now 10-7 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
Senior Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and junior Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil) led the UB offense, as they each notched 18 kills. Oliveira hit .517 on the day and added four blocks (two solos), and Rosa also had eight digs and two solo blocks.
Senior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) was red-hot on offense with 17 kills on 26 attacks with no errors for a .654 attack percentage. Shen recorded a double-double on Saturday, as she contributed to the Bridgeport defense with 15 digs.
UB's Biljana Savic (Grad., Novi Sad, Serbia) had a double with 33 assists and 10 digs. She fell just shy of a triple-double with seven service aces.
Savic's classmate Giovana Soares (Sao Paulo, Brazil) helped direct the Purple Knights' offense with 24 assists, and she also chipped in seven digs.
Senior Amanda Kunrath (Ivoti, Brazil) just missed double-digit kills with nine, and she hit .474 on the afternoon with those nine kills on 19 attacks with zero errors. On defense, Amanda registered three blocks.
Junior libero Martina Santia (Sezze, Italy) lead all players in the match with 20 digs for Bridgeport.
Roberts Wesleyan's Jordan Wilson led all players on the day in kills with 21.
The UB volleyball team is back in action on the road this Tuesday night when the Purple Knights travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to take on the Molloy College Lions in an ECC contest. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
